This design was originally the subject of a painting I did for an art class, studying the environmental effects colors have on each other. I drew it again, this time in Illustrator to be used as a background image for another composition.

American Typewriter Monograph Pamphlet

American Typewriter Monograph

This pamphlet was put together for a course on typography. Each student chose a font and put together a pamphlet using only forms of that font, thus "monograph." I had recently read an article about an artist who drew portraits of famous writers out of letters and thought I'd portray the font as an American bald eagle and a typewriter.

IGAEA Poster

Every year, the Interntational Graphic Arts Education Association holds a contest for the design of their poster for Graphic Communications Week. This was my entry. I based it off of the somewhat specious story that Ben Franklin, despite all his great achievements in life wanted his gravestone to say, "Ben Franklin, Printer."

'Spaz' Movie Poster

This poster was designed to promote a fake movie for a design class at Calpoly. The two white squares at the bottom left of the design are where the MPAA logos go. Considering their views on usage of their stuff, its probably best that I keep those symbols off this site.

"Breakfast of Champions" Dust Jacket

'Breakfast of Champions' Dust Jacket

For a course on book design at Calpoly, the assignment for the quarter was to design a dust jacket for a book, layout and design the text of the book, print it and bind it by hand. I chose Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions." The main illustration was the first of my "Vonnegutia" drawings, which is where those drawings get their name. The illustration was inspired by the work of Wassily Kandinsky.

For a course on typography, the owners of the Family Orthodontic Center of La Mirada, California, asked our class to submit identity packages for the company. You can click the image above to see my letterhead design. The company chose one of my classmates' designs and paid him handsomely for it. (I assume they don't mind me posting their information, since its free advertising for them, but if you are the owner of the Family Orthodontic Center and you want the information taken down, don't hesitate to email me.)

"Vocal! Music" Magazine

'Vocal! Music' Magazine

This magazine was designed for a course on magazine and newspaper design at Calpoly. Originally, I wanted to design a guitar magazine but we were limited to a list of possible titles, so I made a music magazine that was doing a salute to the guitar. With the exception of the photographs, the Yngwie Malmsteen interview, and the diagram of the ear, all content, illustrations and graphics were generated by me. You can view the entire eight page magazine as a pdf here.
